Hel is the daughter of Loki with the giantess Angrboda. She was born half living and half dead, and is often described as half black and half white.
Unwilling to look at her visage, Odin sent Hel to be the ruler of Helheim. While Viking warriors aspired to Valhalla after death, those who did not make it there would find themselves in Helheim.
No one may enter or leave Helheim without the permission of Hel, not even the gods. Her dog Garm guards the gates.
According to the Ragnarok prophecy, at the end of days, Hel will gather an army of the dead and lead them in battle against the gods.
