Odin the All-Father is the most important god in the Norse pantheon. He created Midgard and mankind to occupy it. He is always discovering new wisdom and sharing it with his creations, such as the runes.
He is also the god of war, and the Vikings beseeched Odin for his help in battle. It is also Odin who chooses the souls of brave warriors to dwell in Valhalla, his hall in Asgard.
But Odin would often abandon Asgard and disguise himself as an old wanderer. This allowed him to discover the Norse cosmos in secret. As such he was also the god of wanderers and adventurers, which is how he appears here.
He holds his spear Gungnir in one hand and is joined by his two raven companions Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory). He strides in front of an image of Yggdrasil, the world tree that embodies the Norse universe.
